Illuminations

This body of work was conceived upon reflection of the philosophies surrounding the nature of the Sublime. The Sublime is a sense of elation that is experienced when a force of nature threatens to be physically overwhelming. My work considers notions of the ‘false-Sublime’, an experience that would appear at first to be akin to the Sublime but which lacks the true power of such an encounter.

The subject of these investigations includes the vast nocturnal cityscape. The images show light piercing the darkness and the structures that are a testimony to man’s efforts of construction. Yet this is no Sublime. Not only does it lack the true dominance of natural forces, it is in a constant state of decay and entropy.
